ZEMGear Playa Round

Looks pretty slick, doesn’t it? The Zemgear Playa round (who comes up with their names?) looks a lot like the old Nike Kukuni series that I’ve still been looking for in vain on E-Bay over a decade after their discontinuation, only without all the foam on the bottom. After reading some reviews, I found several complaints of the durability of the upper near the sole. I figured at this price, I could live with replacing them often, so I got a pair:

Hmm. Somehow this is not quite what I was hoping for.

In fact, I think this is the sorriest excuse for a shoe I’ve ever had on my foot. They’ve somehow managed to sew the upper to the underside of the shoe, so the upper touches the ground before the sole. The sole is overly stiff in comparison to the floppy upper, and is quite grippy, and will probably hold to whatever surface you are walking on better than the whole thing will stay on your foot. The silver plastic is embedded firmly in the shoe and provides good support in the middle, but nowhere else. They might make passable water shoes.

You can buy them in several colors and styles on amazon, or you could just sew some insoles to the bottom of your socks, you couldn’t do any worse.
